“Hey ao! Hey ao!” (“A cloud! A cloud!”) exclaimed the daughter of the Mãori explorer Kupe, when she suddenly saw something white on the horizon. It was then that she discovered the Great Barrier Island off what is now Auckland. Thus, the Polynesian sailors named the vast land they discovered shortly thereafter “Aotearoa”: The Land of the Long White Cloud. This may be one of Mãori legends, but even today the Mãori language is called “Aotea”, hence “white cloud”.
The first people to arrive in New Zealand in the 8th century were from eastern Polynesia. This was followed by a series of waves of immigration until about 1300 AD and the Mãori tribes gradually settled the North and South Islands.
In New Zealand, about 15 percent of the population are Mãori. Although most of them lead a Western lifestyle, they have retained their customs and traditions.
